Volunteers are a vital part of any thriving community and there are many different organisations that can help you get involved as a volunteer.

  • Volunteer Centre Brighton and Hove links potential volunteers with local not-for-profit organisations seeking volunteer help.
  • Community Base provides an online search facility that helps put people looking for volunteer opportunities in touch with community and voluntary groups with volunteer opportunities in Brighton and Hove.

Young People

  • Brighton & Hove Volunteers provide support for 16-25 year olds to volunteer in the community.
  • @ctive Student works with students at the university of Brighton to find them volunteering opportunities within the local community.
  • University of Sussex Project V matches University of Sussex staff and students who wish to volunteer with local community and voluntary organisations.

Childrens Centres

  • Volunteering opportunities are offered at some Childrens Centres across the city.  Information about Centres in the city and opportunities to get involved can be accessed here.

Health

  • The LINk (Local Involvement Network) is an independent network of people and organisations, which gives Brighton and Hove residents and groups a stronger voice on health and social care issues.

Housing

Education

  • The Council website provides details about how you can become a school governor. Residents can also apply to become college governors. Those interested in applying at City College Brighton should cantact Peter White by email on p.w@ccb.ac.uk . As for Varndean College Brighton , the main contact is Phillip Harland who can  also be contacted by email on ph@varndean.ac.uk. The Directgov website provides general guidance and further information on what type of work this  involves.
  • Universities also offer volunteering opportunities for those interested in becoming board members. To apply as a member for the Sussex University Council contact Alan Soutter on 01273 873732. As for the University of Brighton, please contact Carol Burns on 01273 642750 or by email on c.a.burns@brighton.ac.uk

Justice system

  • The Justice system offers many volunteering opportunities and these include; volunteering as a magistrate in your area.
  • Residents can also volunteer by providing practical information to all witnesses attending court. Other tasks include: conducting court vists for witnesses. For more information about this type of volunteering visit the Victim Support webiste.
  • Volunteering on Court Boards is also becoming popular. Courts boards scrutinise, review and make recommendations about how courts should be run in their local areas. For more information on how to apply and volunteer as a Court Board member, please write to or call the Surrey and Sussex Area Director’s Office on 01273 409160.
  • Sussex Probation Board - this board delivers a range of services to offenders, all designed to tackle their offending  behaviour. These services include regular supervision meetings, specifically designed programmes and management of unpaid work as punishment for offenders in the community. The board also provides offenders with training in new skills and assistance in finding employment. You can get involved by volunteering as a board member.
  • Sussex Criminal Justice Board aims is to join up local criminal justice agencies to work together to achieve common aims and objectives. Residents can volunteer to join this regional board  as representatives for example, of the Youth Justice Board.
  • Offenders are required to payback something to the community.  Here is an opportunity for you to suggest Community Payback projects or find out how these projects can help you.
  • Residents can get involved in keeping their communities safe by volunteering with the Young Offending Service team. Volunteers are needed to help with referral order panels and mentoring schemes; training is provided.
